Look At This Photograph...

This is Flynn’s first picture. It was taken on his birth day, February 19th, 2017. He was just a few hours old and his first visitors were his daddy and his aunt (my sister), who actually took this picture. I wasn’t able to meet him for another couple of days, so this picture is extremely important to me. It stirs up a lot of emotions - happiness, pride, sadness, anxiety - a whole spectrum of tears fill my eyes even now, almost three years later.

It took me awhile to actually post this particular picture. When we announced his birth, we chose only to show his teeny little foot and spoke only briefly about his early arrival. Honestly, I didn’t want people’s first impression of our long-awaited, miracle baby to be one of pity for his weakness or one that was clouded by tubes and wires. This picture doesn’t show that fierce preemie conviction that all preemie parents see as their children fight to live, so instead, we kept a lot private for awhile. We wanted celebration, not pity for being the “unlucky” one in ten.

One in ten babies is born prematurely (before 37 weeks) every year. November is Prematurity Awareness Month, so I will be sharing our story...the one that made us a statistic.
